11 years ago, I (Gail) created and founded the people's yoga collective as an ideological dream to make yoga accessible to people regardless of their ability to pay. My favorite yoga studios in NYC and on the west coast were all donation-based and community centered. It felt like Madison was ripe for a similar kind of yoga studio focus. Our first home was a pop-up space on Baldwin street that is now The Marquette.

Our second home was the Wil-Mar center which is where we built and grew our community. We moved to our own space on Willy St. in 2016 and kept on growing, offering our first yoga teacher training in 2018, and a full roster of classes and workshops up until the pandemic hit in 2020. In order to keep our community together, I offered online classes and when the weather permitted, outdoor classes on the Yahara River bank.

Two of our TPYC teacher training graduates, Callie Graves and Amanda Hagen, also started teaching at "our" outdoor studio. Eventually I sold the studio space but we all kept on gathering week after week outdoors and, for the past two winters, offering classes at a pop-up space on Willy St. a few doors down from our old studio. All this to say, we are beyond thrilled to be making a full circle return to the Wil-Mar Center for our winter offerings and hopefully more.

Amanda and Callie alternate teaching the gentle class on Mondays. Gail teaches the yoga dance poetry party on Wednesdays. All classes are all donation.

Thank you Wil-mar for welcoming us back. We look forward to a gentle and grounded and flowy and dancy and poetry filled community-based yoga winter together.
